Ovalau Reef

On the east side of Ovalau there is a large anchorage surrounded by a barrier reef with two clear breaks. This was relatively easy for sailing ships to use. The whalers came first, followed by traders wanting sandalwood, beche de mer, and workers for Australian cane fields. Ovalau was the first European capital of Fiji, but now the capital is in Suva.
