Tarawa was the scene of a fierce battle between U.S. Marine invaders and defending Japanese troops. The invasion was unfortunately scheduled for low tide, so the landing crafts could not get all the way to the beach and the shore guns were very effective. The Marines eventually won, but casualties were heavy.
