Mae Thoranee Relief on Wat

On top of Huay Xai's hill is Wat Jom Khao Manilat, constructed in 1880. This exterior relief shows the legend of Mae Thoranee, the Earth Goddess, coming to Buddha's assistance. While meditating under the Bodhi tree, he was threatened by (the Devil) Mara's army. Mae Thoranee wrung from her hair water representing the merit Buddha had accumulated during his incarnations. The tremendous flood defeated Mara and allowed Buddha to attain enlightenment.
