Blue-Sailed Karkar

"Karkar" was what the locals called the smallest sized outrigger canoes at Ailuk. They appeared to be about 15 feet long and were steered with an oar. The sail on this one was made from a cheap plastic tarpulin, not unusual and apparently strong enough for a small sail. Karkars were often sailed by young boys, like these carrying a bag of copra.
