Flying the outrigger too high could be dangerous, since it was possible to flip the canoe over. Lifting the outrigger clear of the water eliminated some water resistance and made the boat go faster. It was not unusual to see the sailors trying to develop top speed. The man on the end of the outrigger was trying to keep it down with his weight.
