A Load of Pandanus

This family gathered a load of pandanus fruit from their islet. This was an important food in Ailuk when we were there, though we never saw pandanus eaten anywhere else. No supply ship had come to their atoll for several months so they were forced to rely on this traditional fare. The islanders gave us some to try, both cooked and raw, and we found it edible but not delicious. They were delighted to trade with us for rice and noodles.
