Paddling Bitter Gourds to Market

Inle Lake was very shallow and had a network of canals and other sheltered waterways around its edges. This permitted canoes to be used which would be swamped by waves in unprotected waters. The amount of water which could be held inside this canoe was probably not enough to sink it. This woman was paddling bitter gourds past a floating island.
