Building Floating Islands

The floating islands ("kyun myaw" in the local language) were constructed from water hyacinth, marsh grass and soil. They were staked to the bottom of the shallow lake with bamboo poles. These islands were very fertile and produced large amounts of food but had to be renewed periodically. They were built and farmed primarily by Intha people. There were 17 villages on stilts around the lake where these people lived.
