Black Lacquer

This was the basic coating for all Myanmar lacquerware products. It was usually applied over a framework of bamboo, then sanded and recoated several times. High-quality lacquerware may have 18 coats of this black lacquer. On top of that was a painted and/or scratched pattern to finish the product. Myinkaba had several small lacquerware manufacturing operations and shops.
