| Gubyauknge temple was not far from our guesthouse in Nyaung U
Village. It was built in the "early" Bagan period and still had
excellent stucco carvings outside and original paintings inside. This
is where we first learned about the nat figures on either side of the
entrance to the chamber containing the image of Buddha meditating.
These nats were guarding the door and warning visitors not to disturb
Buddha's meditation. We later saw similar nat guards in other
temples. Mawman unlocked the temple for us and guided us around. She
lived nearby with her husband Tun Tun, a sand-painting artist who
made us a custom sand painting. |
