| Elementary schools charged 5000 kyats (about $5 US) per month per student, while it cost 30,000 kyats/month to send a child to high school. Even for elementary students, this was more than some families could afford. An alternative was to have a boy join a monastery where he got education plus food and lodging. These seven boys were the student monks at the Titian Monastery where we spent the second night of our trek. |
