Sea Monster

This appears to be a Makara, a mythical sea monster. In the Mekong River below this Chiang Khong temple live the largest freshwater fish in the world. The giant Mekong catfish (pangasianodon gigas) grow to 9 feet in length and weigh up to 600 pounds. Perhaps the big fish have helped to generate belief about sea monsters in this area.
