Here is a cashew still on the tree. It has a ripe fruit (the red part, sometimes called the "cashew apple") with the nut attached to the bottom. The fruit is edible, sweet and higher in vitamin C than oranges, but its thin skin makes transportation difficult. The distinctive aroma of the fruit could be smelled in most parts of the island. Hornbills and small fruit bats eat some of the fruit and nuts on the island.
