While cashews are the main agricultural product of Ko Phayam, we did see some rubber trees on the island. Raw latex runs down grooves cut into the trunk and drips into the little cup. Rubber tappers have to empty all the cups every day during the tapping season (the dry season in Thailand). New grooves have to be cut periodically, and bushes among the trees need to be kept cut down. This is all hard work for which they receive little pay.
