The self-steering uses a rudder separate from the one controlled by the steering wheel. This second rudder is activated when a change in apparent wind direction causes the (black) wind vane to move, which pulls wires controlling the rudder trim-tab. We found it extremely useful and it did almost all our steering on long passages  |
