Borobudur was constructed between 778 and 850, buried under volcanic ash about 1000 and then overgrown with vegetation. It was rediscovered in 1814. A major restoration effort was completed in 1911 and another in 1983. There are nine levels built with 2,000,000 cubic feet of volcanic stone on top of a small hill. |
