This is typical of the many purse seiners up to 300 feet long which use Majuro as a base. They find schools of tuna with their helicopter, then capture an entire school at once with an enormous net. After about a week they are full with many tons of frozen fish, and return to Majuro. Here they transfer their catch to a much larger "mother ship" and take on more fuel and supplies. The mother ships stay in Majuro, and each one takes care of several purse seiners. When a mother ship is full of fish and empty of supplies, it goes back to its home base and is replaced by another, while the purse seiners continue catching fish. |
