The Benguela Current contained a rich variety of fish which the seals exploited. Along the southern coast of Africa they consumed more than a million tons of fish and other marine organisms per year. Their dense fur enabled them to maintain an internal body temperature of 37 degrees C (98.6 F) even during long immersions in cold water. They were somewhat clumsy on land but were magnificent swimmers and seemed to enjoy playing in the surf. |
