There are four chiefs ("Ariki" means "Chief") with a traditional hierarchy based on when their ancestors arrived. Each is head of a village and also head of a clan. Ariki Kafika is the number 1 chief of Tikopia. We met him several times. He seemed very interested in maintaining their Polynesian traditions in the face of modern pressures.
